The theft of religious symbols in Naples is no longer a taboo, and perhaps it never was, but now it seems to have become an established routine.
Last April, the statue of the Madonna placed in memory of the victims of the landslide that killed 26 people in Posillipo in 1948, near Palazzo Donn'Anna, was stolen. The incident was reported by the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli and the municipal one Lorenzo Pascucci,
Now a statue depicting Jesus Christ has disappeared. It was a man, caught on surveillance cameras, who stole it from the display case of a votive shrine installed in via Titina De Filippo.
A group of shopkeepers and residents of the area turned to Councilor Borrelli to report the incident:“We are really fed up with these thefts and robberies that are affecting us and also tourists.”
"We filed a complaint hoping that this individual can be identified as soon as possible or that he will repent and return the statuette. This is a truly despicable act. We ask the thief to repent and anyone who saw or knows something to come forward," Borrelli's words.
