Santa Maria Capua Vetere. This morning at the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua Santa Maria Capua Vetere, the Public Prosecutor at the Court of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, Dr. Carmine Renzulli, the Commander of the Carabinieri for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC), Gen. B. Roberto Riccardi, the Director of the Campania Regional Museums Directorate, Dr. Marta Ragozzino and the Director of the Archaeological Museum of Ancient Capua, the Campanian Amphitheatre and the Mithraeum, Dr. Ida Gennarelli, met with the press regarding the investigative activity that led to the recovery of important cultural assets illegally stolen and exported to the United States.
The exhibition of works was set up for the occasion.
Great satisfaction from Mayor Antonio Mirra, present today at the handover ceremony.
“It is an important day for our City. After 37 years these two sculptures, depicting Dionysus and the Emperor Septimius Severus, return to Santa Maria Capua Vetere after being stolen in 1985 from the Antiquarium of the Campanian Amphitheatre.
The emotional value that binds us Sammaritans to our history is immeasurable but to give you the dimension of the pecuniary one, just think that the sculpture of Septimius Severus was put up for auction in New York with a starting price of 600.000 euros.
I, the entire Administration with Councilor Ferriero and the entire city community thank, from the bottom of our hearts, the Public Prosecutors Dr. Renzulli and Dr. Urbano, General Riccardi of the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage for the very important operation thanks to which from today we can once again enjoy the beauty of these two extraordinary works.
