Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Prisoner damages cell because he wants to talk to magistrate.
It happened last night in the Tevere section where the prisoner went so far as to break the cells and even to break down the armoured door. The latest episode that has occurred in the prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere is the vice-president of the trade confederation CON.SI.PE., Luciano Martiniello.
“Such behavior- explains Martiniello– highly dangerous for those who were doing their job at that moment, was stopped only thanks to the intervention of the Preposto with the help of the agents of the Tevere department, thus avoiding the situation from degenerating and resolving everything by "satisfying" the prisoner who was the protagonist of the violent behavior with a video call to the PM on duty.
Events like the one just described now occur frequently and it goes without saying that this situation represents a serious danger for prison police officers, now abandoned to their fate without protection and prevention with the result of making Italian prisons an increasingly dangerous place and far from what books and principles describe and define.
We are therefore appealing (in vain?) once again to the competent institutions to re-define the rules, take precautions, and adopt measures to protect the primary legal asset which is the life of those who personally engage in a job of primary importance for the community as a whole.
Among the many other episodes, we can point out that of a prisoner who climbed the wall surrounding the walkways in protest. Or even more serious appears to have been the action of another prisoner undertaken against a prison police officer, without any reason, in order to threaten and offend him in a violent and intimidating way”.
The vice president of the trade confederation CON.SI.PE., Mr. Martiniello Luciano, in underlining the difficulties of the Italian prison system and the need for new rules and protocols in this regard, having regard to the purposes that it is aimed at, wants to highlight to those in charge, how the prison police are left alone and at the mercy of events risking their lives every day for the sole purpose of working and providing a service for the community of considerable importance and therefore, makes and hopes for desirable reforms that go to safeguard the lives of good people who only carry out their job.
For Luigi Castaldo, regional secretary of Campania Asppe confederated by Consipe (Confederation of Penitentiary Police Unions): “the overcrowding of the Campania penitentiary institutions connected to the atavistic lack of staff in the various departments, is determining a highly risky working context for everyone, but above all it makes the institutional mandate of the Penitentiary Police Corps ineffective, one wonders how one can talk about treatment and re-education in light of what is happening”.
