Free beaches in the province of Naples: blitz by activists for the 'Presa della Battigia' In Procida, Pozzuoli and throughout Italy.

They renamed it 'The capture of the Battigia', inspired by the culminating historical event of the French Revolution of 1789 which occurred on 14 July, the protest action which took place on a beach in Arco Felice, on the Phlegraean coast north of Naples.

The protesters, from the Comitato mare libero bene comune, brought banners and leaflets among the bathers of the historic free beach of Monachelle denouncing the encroachment of the manager of the neighboring beach resort who would have enlarged his area of relevance by many meters.

“We understand that just a few days ago – one of the protesters explained into a megaphone – The Carabinieri and the Port Authority have found that the beach club next door is using a large piece of beach without permission, which should instead be made available free of charge, avoiding, as is also happening this morning, that many of you are forced to share a few meters of beach”.

"Today – added another protester – It is the day of the storming of the shoreline, it is our 14th of July and just as happened in France at the Bastille we too will make a small revolution in order to assert our right to a free sea".

After having received the support and applause of those present, the initiative continued with the measurement of the beach and the symbolic reappropriation of the excess beach where the protesters, once the perimeter was marked with red and white tape, laid out towels and then dived into the water. A similar initiative, as on other beaches in Italy by the association 'Mare Libero', took place in Procida where other protesters marched in procession on the famous Chiaiolella beach.
