To die because of an argument, a squabble, a cigarette: killed by kicks and punches.
It happened to Turin where a passerby lost his life after being beaten by a twenty-year-old high on crack. “I killed a person,” he confessed in tears at the police station Francesco Lo Manto, 20 years old, resident in the Piedmont capital. The young man had taken crack and, around four in the morning, was on the balcony which overlooks Piazza Vittoria, in a popular neighborhood of the city.
At that moment he was passing by Augustus Bernardi, 56 years old, who lived nearby and, as the neighbors say, was “a kind gentleman who always said hello”. What happened between the two is unclear.. “He asked me for a cigarette – Lo Manto claims – and then I went down.”

What is certain is that the young man, still in his slippers, began to hit with slaps and punches because he thought that the man had stolen his smartphone which he had left at home (“I had a stick but I didn't use it”) until Augusto collapsed to the ground. Francesco then went back up to his apartment. At the sight of the police he got out and let them load him into the patrol car without any excesses.
Residents say he also knocked on a neighbor's door to get a glass of water, but it's unclear whether this was before or after the crime.
