Criticism on Sunday afternoon in the juvenile prison of Airola, in the Benevento area. The news was reported by Sabatino De Rosa, vice regional coordinator for the juvenile sector of the autonomous prison police union in Campania.
"Around 5:30 p.m., a North African prisoner, who had previously swallowed detergent and then attempted to ingest some batteries, set fire to the mattress in his cell ," he says. " The timely intervention of the officers on duty was crucial, raising the alarm and providing first aid."
That evening, the juvenile facility was left without water and electricity for several hours. "The reasons for the incident are still unknown, but what is certain is that in the entire juvenile prison, only four police officers were on duty, including the porter and the supervisor, " SAPPE reported. " Each officer had two units, far below the minimum security threshold. This is a problem that has been extensively discussed previously, but the juvenile prison leadership appears to be turning a deaf ear."
Donato Capece , the union's general secretary, urges ministerial intervention: "We must act as soon as possible because Penitentiary Police personnel are stretched to the limit. It's incomprehensible that those who have the duty to intervene, namely the regional and national Juvenile and Community Justice Administration, are not acting promptly."
