Avellino, 1.722 kilograms of contraband cigarettes seized: 2 arrests
The Guardia di Finanza of Avellino continues its work to combat the spread and sale of contraband cigarettes.
In recent days, the finance police of the Provincial Command of Avellino seized a large quantity of contraband cigarettes and a van, arresting two people.
In this context, the financial police of the Economic and Financial Police Unit of Avellino, during a territorial control service, prepared within the framework of the regional plan to combat illicit trafficking in general, aimed at also combating the phenomenon of smuggling of foreign manufactured tobacco, identified a man who, having arrived at a square located on the outskirts of Naples on board a van driven by him, began, together with another individual, to load cardboard boxes, taken from a refrigerator cell abandoned there.
The financial police, suspicious of the anomalous operations and the attitude of the two individuals, intervened and carried out a check, discovering that inside the boxes there were packs of cigarettes without the State Monopolies mark.
Overall, on board the vehicle and the refrigerated cell, 8.610 packs of Marlboro brand cigarettes were found, for a total weight of 1.722 kg, ready to feed the black market in Campania, for a value of over 430.000 euros.
The service activity ended with the arrest of the two individuals, both from Naples, the seizure of the vehicle and the contraband tobacco.
The service operation carried out is part of the Corps' strategy to combat cigarette smuggling, aimed not only at dismantling transnational criminal organizations, which pollute the legal economy and steal huge resources from the Treasury, but also at preventing the consumption of so-called "cheap white" or "illicit white" cigarettes, which cannot be sold in Italy or within the European Union as they are harmful to the health of consumers.
