Volturno Castle. An hour after the end-of-summer “big concert”, which raised so much environmental controversy, the long-awaited miracle took place: last night around one o'clock, on the beach of the “beach boyz” lido in Castel Volturno, in the Villaggio del Sole area, just 500 metres after the Fiore Flava Beach lido where the Jova Beach Party with almost 20 thousand spectators, about thirty baby Caretta Caretta turtles emerged from the sand and headed towards the sea, watched closely by the volunteers of the Domizia association, who look after the turtle sites on the Caserta and Naples coasts with the Enpa Salerno on behalf of the “Caretta in vista” project of the Anton Dohrn zoological station.
“Beach concerts and Caretta Caretta sites can coexist – says the president of the association Domizia Vincenzo Ammaliato – the important thing is that there is mutual attention and respect”. The little ones were “escorted” by volunteers, and easily found the sea, also because the place where they were born is not very urbanized, there being no houses in the area and therefore there were no lights that could influence the orientation of the little turtles.
“Now we will wait 48 hours for any other hatchings,” explains Ammaliato, “and if there aren’t any, we will dig to see if there are other eggs.” At the moment, over 130 turtles have hatched in three sites in Castel Volturno, and hatchings are expected in two other beaches.
