Estimates from the Confesercenti Campania Observatory: 40 jobs at risk. President Vincenzo Schiavo: “The current Government needs to take action, with cuts to these expenses and support for businesses. The costs are unsustainable for many catering and hotel businesses”.
Alarm from Confesercenti Campania: over 11 thousand companies are at risk of closure and 40 thousand workers risk unemployment due to the high cost of energy. This is what emerges from the study byConfesercenti Observatory of our region, in support of the estimates of Confesercenti Nazionale, which predict a huge bill of 11 billion euros for small and medium-sized Italian tourism and tertiary enterprises, forced to cushion the impact of the increases in energy and gas prices.
This is an expected increase of about 8 billion more than the previous 12 months. An unsustainable blow, which risks putting 90 thousand businesses in Italy out of business. In Campania the alarm is red, as underlined by the president of Confesercenti Campania (and national vice president with responsibility for the South) Vincenzo Schiavo.
“The situation is very complicated: according to the estimate of our Observatory, also taking into account the new increases in the cost of energy and gas unfortunately expected for October, the activities in our region at risk of closure, by December, are as many as 11.300. Three thousand restaurants out of a total of 16 thousand in Campania risk having to close their doors, the same goes for 6000 bars (out of 30 existing) that may not be able to cope with these expenses.
The situation is also difficult in the hotel sector: according to our estimates 300 Hotel (out of 1600) and 2000 Bed & Breakfast (out of 10 thousand) risk closure by the end of the year. An absolute tragedy that would involve, moreover, over 40 thousand workers, who would find themselves unemployed from one day to the next, perhaps crowding the ranks of the citizen's income that only gives a hope of survival and not the dignity of a secure job".
The numbers are dramatic, despite the tourism boom in Campania in August and in summer.
"The restaurant and hotel sectors are the most affected by the high bills. The restaurants and hotels in Naples and Campania that are making profits are not many. Only the businesses that are doing very well - warns Vincenzo Schiavo - can in fact afford to pay up to 10 thousand euros for electricity compared to the 2000 euros on average that they paid before.
The 400% increase can be sustained in Naples, for example, only by premises on the seafront or in the historic centre. For all other businesses in less central areas or in the province, where such profits have not been recorded, entrepreneurs will have to make a choice, that is, whether to pay these expenses or the employees, whether to face these monstrous energy costs or bear the rent costs of the premises. The dilemma becomes tragic when the decision is between paying and getting into debt or closing the business. And over 11 thousand entrepreneurs risk being forced to close if the State does not intervene”.
The alarm cry of Confesercenti Campania rises, therefore, loud and impetuous, with the State absolutely called to intervene. "We at Confesercenti - explains President Schiavo - reiterate, and will do so in all venues, the absolute urgency of the issue and the pressing need for immediate interventions both by the outgoing Draghi Government and by the one that will be formed after the elections and which, presumably, will only be operational in November. We strongly request that the current Government take immediate action, suspending or cutting these costs, with support and other interventions. Without forgetting - concludes Schiavo – that in September without bonuses there will also be high prices for gasoline, in addition to the expected increases on primary goods. For businesses and consumers, a black crisis is expected in the autumn”.
NATIONAL DATA. La Maxi-Bill of 11 billion in the next 12 months, +8 billion compared to last year, will weigh, according to Confersercenti Nazionale, in particular on Italian companies in the sector Catering, which will have to spend - with the same consumption - almost 2 billion euros more (+1.944 million), while for bars and other activities without kitchens the burden would be just over one billion euros (+1.045 millions).
The impact on hotel accommodation is also very significant: for hotels, guesthouses and small hotels the additional outlay will be over 1,5 billion euros (+1.575 million). For local shops, however, the high cost of bills will cost 912 million euros more, while the increase in spending for Italian fuel distributors will be +436 million euros in twelve months.
I price increases will also have a negative effect on consumption. bills and inflation are pushing families to redistribute their budgets, in a context conditioned by theincrease in fixed costs. The share of average monthly expenditure committed to household expenses and utilities (housing, water, electricity and gas) goes from 37,4% in 2021 to 38% in 2022, and the incidence of expenditure on transport also increases by 0,7 points.
Virtually all other items are paying the price, with decreases recorded in beverages, clothing and footwear, communications, recreation, entertainment and culture, and even healthcare spending. "Without support, the small business system will remain crushed by rising costs. The government in office should act using all the powers at its disposal, with targeted interventions also for small and medium-sized businesses", ha sottolineato Patricia DeLouise, National President of Confesercenti.
