Pompeii. “Let's get ready, a ship of faggots is coming' a couple of cruise passengers who arrived at the Pompeii excavations were greeted in this way. The offense – according to a complaint on Facebook by Antonello Sannino, secretary of Antinoo Arcigay Napoli – was allegedly made by some employees of the Pompeii archaeological park. The episode was reported by a couple of young people who immediately reported the incident to Sannino.
“A park employee (or perhaps a guide, but still provided with an identification badge) – writes Sannino – in a confrontation with other employees, he allegedly told a colleague, verbatim: 'let's get ready, a shipload of faggots is coming', referring to tourists arriving in Pompeii from a gay-friendly cruise, docked in the port of Naples. When the two boys asked for an apology, the person mentioned above refused, claiming that "it is a local custom to use this definition.
“It is not acceptable – Sannino comments – that in a place that is a symbol of Italian art and culture in the world, the archaeological park of the ancient city of Pompeii, an employee can behave in this uncivilized and unprofessional way. Our association, 'Pride Vesuvio Rainbow', in providing full assistance and solidarity to the two young victims of this unfortunate episode, has already taken steps to have a meeting with the Superintendency of the archaeological park of Pompeii, in order to discuss what happened, and above all so that provisions and measures are adopted so that what happened should never happen again in the future.
The episode also pushes us to urge the Campania Region to fully implement the regional law against homotransphobia, starting with the establishment of the Regional Observatory against hate crimes related to sexual orientation and gender identity, provided for by law and not yet operational".
