The secretary of the Democratic Party, Enrico Letta, in an interview published this morning in Avvenire, comments on the possible victory of the Right in the next national elections.
"The truth is that abroad today there is a nightmare. Everyone remembers the abyss of 2011, with the Berlusconi government – and Tremonti and Meloni were ministers – forced to resign because the country was on the verge of bankruptcy. Ten years later, Italy has recovered and recovered. But here they are again in the same formation ready for a new bankruptcy. The concern is evidently there and legitimate. The protagonists are the same three as then, with ten more years and no lessons learned from the mistakes made".
And Enrico Letta, on the ever-present spectre of gas price increases, always comments on the situation in Avvenire: “Putin brought the black cloud of high gas prices with a fierce war on a sovereign country. Today is the first national emergency. The Democratic Party has proposed 5 immediate actions: first, a European cap on the price of gas; second, for 12 months, a regime of managed prices for electricity with the decoupling of fossil fuels and renewables; third, the doubling of the tax credit for extra energy costs for businesses; fourth, a new "social electricity bill" contract for micro-businesses and families with medium and low incomes; fifth, a major plan for renewables and energy saving. On decoupling, Germany seems to want to proceed in the same direction since yesterday. As for the government, I am convinced that it will intervene effectively and I hope that it will accept all or some of our proposals. As always, we will support it with loyalty. But I ask: with what credibility do those who, in contempt of seriousness and a sense of national interest, brought down Draghi, today urge him to act? The voters must give the answer."
