Fat a u-turn on the A1 with a white SUV heading towards Roma, putting oncoming cars and trucks at risk, forced to suddenly brake.
Caught on camera, the foreign driver was later stopped by patrols of the Highway Police of the Rome North Subsection and the Viterbo Section, who had been alerted. The man justified himself by stating that, after taking the wrong direction, the on-board navigator gave him instructions to reverse direction as soon as possible, which he did.
The driver was sanctioned by the Highway Patrol with the withdrawal of his license and a fine of up to 8 thousand euros, as well as with the impoundment of the vehicle for three months. The police are preparing two dossiers, one for the Rieti Prosecutor's Office that highlights the criminal aspects of the conduct, the other for the authorities of his country, so that the license is no longer issued to him.
“In the face of those images there are no words to express the indignation of those who, due to such absurd conduct, are still mourning the loss of a loved one,” declared Paolo Maria Pomponio, director of the Traffic Police Service at the Central Directorate of the Specialties of the State Police.
“I assured the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt, during a recent meeting,” he added, “that the State Police will do everything to spread the universal value of road safety. Even by taking away the ability to drive from those who, with their reckless behavior, continue to seriously endanger the lives of unsuspecting motorists. Because driving is not a joke, but a very serious thing.”
