Linda Cerruti talks about insults again sexists and vulgar received after sharing a photo taken on the beach showing off the eight medals won at the recent European Synchronized Swimming Championships.
"I wrote what I had to write in my post. Now it's time to act: I want to understand how to proceed through legal channels. Maybe with the postal police, especially on the more explicit comments. I do it for myself, and for the children who see us as an example", says the athlete in an interview with Repubblica.
Cerruti had already spoken about the matter in a post on Instagram: "disgusted by the hundreds, probably thousands, of inappropriate, sexist and vulgar comments that accompany it. After more than 20 years of training and sacrifice, I find it nothing short of SHAMEFUL and it really hurts my heart to read this horde of people making jokes that sexualize my body. Are a butt and two legs really all that's left, the main topic to talk about?".
“In my small way, with my post, I am not turning the world upside down, but if everyone does something in their own small way, sooner or later these social dynamics will end,” he added in the interview with Repubblica. “It almost seems like it is becoming normal, the order of the day, for famous athletes and celebrities in the entertainment world.”
And on the position chosen for the targeted photo he concludes: “It's not by chance: it was the entrance of the single exercise at my first European Championship in 2010, that pose we show before the music starts and we dive into the pool. It's a vertical split on the head, a form of expression of my sport that I wanted to celebrate”. “There's a lot of work behind those medals”, concludes Cerruti who talks about the many hours spent training.
