NapoliIt is called 'machine perfusion' and is a technology available today Cardarelli of Naples, essential for improving and prolonging the life of organs for therapeutic transplant purposes.
It is thanks to this new technology that in recent days the surgeons of the Cardarelli Liver Transplant Center (which is part of the Transplant Department) were able to save the life of Salvatore (name changed to protect his privacy) by offering him a chance of recovery that would otherwise be impossible. The man, 66 years old, was suffering from terminal liver cirrhosis, made even more complex by hepatocarcinoma.
"Twenty-four hours after the transplant - explains team leader Gianni Vennarecci - we can say that everything went well, the patient is awake, in good general condition and with good function of the transplanted organ. This new technology has the advantage of reducing the damage induced by ischemia-reperfusion compared to classic perfusion techniques, furthermore it also allows a functional evaluation of the organ before the transplant, limiting the risks of non-function or delayed functional recovery of the organs".
Machine perfusion is just the latest of the modern technologies desired by the strategic management of the hospital to offer patients the best treatment opportunities. Without this technology, Salvatore would hardly have had the opportunity to undergo a life-saving transplant in such a short time.
"The use of machines that keep organs alive through hypothermic oxygenated perfusion - says the director of the Transplant Department Ciro Esposito - allows us to improve the quality of organs before transplantation. This technique reduces the limits of the current technique of organ preservation, contributing to increasing the number and quality of organs".
