On Friday 2 September at 20.30:12 pm, the awards ceremony of the VI edition of the “Regina Coppola” Casa della Poesia International Prize will be held at the Teatro Genovesi (via Sichelgaita, XNUMXa – Salerno), which aims to valorise the work carried out by a woman, over the years, in the literary, civil and social fields.
The jury – composed of Raffaella Marzano (President), Giancarlo Cavallo, Sergio Iagulli, Francesco Napoli, Sotirios Pastakas, Juan Vicente Piqueras and Stefania Zuliani -, will award the prize, for the 2022 edition, to Devorah Major (pictured), one of the most important contemporary American poets, the third Poet Laureate of San Francisco after Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Janice Mirikitani. “She is the voice of the weak and the forgotten, of migrants, of the 'mixed race', of those who sooner or later, despite racism and growing fascism, will inherit this land”.
His poetry collection “Street Smarts” (Curbston Press, 1997), has been called “musical and energetic”, a work that requires a living voice to release its emotional power.
The artist received the American Library Association's Black Caucus First Novelist Award for her novel “An Open Weawe” (Seal Press, 1996), a story that revolves around the female figures of an extended African-American family.
Two new books by Devorah Major, “With more than tongue” (Creative Arts Books, Inc.) and “Where river meets ocean” (City Lights Publishing), have been published in recent years. The poet’s activities include not only publications, but also musical works, recordings, and performances with various artists, including Opal Palmer Adisa, with whom she has formed the poetry performance group “Daughters of Yam.”
The two famous poets have published together “Traveling Women”, and a jazz CD “The Tongue Is a Drum”, a sound recording of poetry and music.
In Italy, Major's poetry, which "lives in that flash between becoming and dissolving", has been translated thanks to the careful and timely work of Casa della poesia, which in 2019 published her first 'Italian' book - "A braccia aperte" - translated by Raffaella Marzano (Multimedia Edizioni). On the evening of September 2, the poet will be accompanied in her readings by maestro Gaspare Di Lieto on the piano. Free admission until seats are filled.
