A brutal murder , carried out with an axe . Then the knives were used to cut up the body and throw it into a canal . A mystery solved by the wife's confession and the corroboration of her words. A horrifying crime, the circumstances of which are yet to be clarified, perhaps linked to a serious mental disorder in a seemingly peaceful elderly couple.
In just under a month, the Carabinieri of Rovigo have solved the murder of Shefki Kurti , 72, an Albanian citizen resident in Badia Polesine ( Rovigo ), whose body was recovered in pieces, stuffed in garbage bags, between July 28th and 31st, at various points along the Adigetto canal , between Lendinara and Villanova del Ghebbo . Last Saturday, the military of the Polesine Provincial Command arrested his wife, Nadire , 68.
The woman's confession was made on August 18th ; over the course of nine days, investigators verified that her statements were consistent with the evidence gathered during the investigation, citing concerns that the woman may not be fully capable of discernment. Since August 12th, the elderly woman, who had been treated by a specialist for years, has been admitted to the psychiatric ward of the Rovigo hospital, and now that the precautionary measure has been taken, she is under police surveillance.
An assessment, already ordered, will assess her mental health, and the precautionary measure could be changed as a result. The inspection by the Parma RIS on August 8th was crucial to the investigation , as they found traces of the deceased husband's blood inside the home where the couple lived.
Traces that had apparently been removed by the wife, who had thoroughly cleaned the house after the murder. In her confession, the woman said she had used an axe and knives, struck her husband, and then cut the body into pieces to make it easier to transport to the Adigetto , a canal that branches off from the Adige at Badia to flow into the Canalbianco after Adria.
The axe and three kitchen knives, one of which was serrated, were found after the confession, between August 19 and 20. It seems that the woman first hit her husband from behind in the bedroom, with the axe, and then moved to the bathroom to chop him up and fill the garbage bags with which to get rid of the body. The brutal manner of the murder had initially led the investigation in directions other than the internal issue of the family, and relationships with loan sharks or organized crime had not been ruled out.
The murder likely occurred between July 21st and 22nd . The fact that the first findings were made a week later prevented the Carabinieri from obtaining any useful video from surveillance cameras in the area, which was deleted by law. The couple's two children, of Albanian origin but Italian citizens, were interviewed several times by investigators but never contradicted themselves. They proved to be reliable and completely uninvolved in the events. One lives in Masi (Padua), the other in Switzerland . They had been informed by their mother of yet another argument between her and their father, and that he had disappeared without a trace.
