Dr. Anna Maria Zaccaria, "This is the second step of a project called "Perifericittà" (Periphery Cities), which focuses on the suburbs within and outside cities. The School will be based on the Federico II University campus in Naples, located in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighborhood. This will be the setting for the School's participants, who will also travel to the surrounding suburbs of Ponticelli and Scampia. This project will be supported not only by social scientists—primarily urban sociologists—but also by architects, urban planners, and the engineers who built the Federico II campus. The theme of the suburbs as a hub for innovation is an idea that seeks to overturn a vision according to which the city drives the suburbs, in a relationship of dependence. What we will try to understand is whether the opposite can be true, whether we can think about suburbs capable of autonomously triggering processes of urban and social regeneration, which may not be highly visible but are certainly effective."

The planned activities will take place at the Federico II University Campus in San Giovanni a Teduccio (NA). The training program includes the presence of national and international experts and operational comparison sessions with a learning by doing approach (field activities, direct observation, thematic workshops). Miguel Angel Martinez, from the University of Uppsala, will be a guest of the School, which will discuss with the participants the movements for housing in the Spanish suburbs.

The main objective of the Summer School is to promote research methods and techniques to study socio-territorial changes and to manage their processes from an ethical and social, territorial and environmental sustainability perspective.

The training offer is aimed at scholars, researchers of social sciences, freelancers, local administrators, third sector operators to analyze, develop and design initiatives, interventions and urban policies attentive to the balance between society, territory and ecology.

The XI Summer School of Advanced Training in Sociology of the Territory may be recognized as an internship activity for students of bachelor's and master's degrees who recognize the Italian Association of Sociology as an accredited body.
