This is what Giuseppe Cimino, secretary of the Independent Union of Penitentiary Police, reports. Cimino emphasizes that "The inmate is no stranger to assaulting staff. In fact, he was recently transferred to the Benevento facility for safety and order from Ariano Irpino prison, where he had previously caused similar problems."
Donato Capece, general secretary of SAPPE, urges ministerial interventions: "We must act as soon as possible because the Penitentiary Police staff is exhausted. This cannot continue without a minimum level of safety for our colleagues who go to work and don't know if and when they'll return home, free from injuries or anything else.
I am concerned about this latest serious incident in the Benevento prison, especially since our reports to the Department of Penitentiary Administration (DAP) in Rome about the malfunctions and inconveniences affecting the safety and operation of Campania's prisons and the Penitentiary Police personnel who work there with professionalism, dedication, and humanity despite significant staffing shortages continue to go unheeded. And it is incomprehensible that those who have the duty to intervene, namely the regional and national penitentiary administration, are not acting promptly.
