The defendant and the judge face each other. The wait for the verdict becomes the catalyst for two diametrically opposed stories, yet they share the same origin. This is the story of "Dura Lex," a short film directed by Maurizio Braucci, which will premiere on September 26th at 6:45 pm at the French Institute in Naples, as an Out of Competition event at the 23rd Naples Film Festival.

Produced by Antonio Acampora and Armando Ciotola for CinemaFiction, a Naples-based production company and acting school, in association with CCO - Crisi Come Opportunità, “Dura Lex” was conceived and written by inmates of the screenwriting course led by Fabrizio Nardi, and produced as part of the “Permanent Cultural Presidium in the Airola Juvenile Prison” project, with the support of the “Alta Mane Italia” Foundation and coordinated by rapper Luca Caiazzo, aka "Lucariello," thanks to the collaboration of Marianna Adanti, Director of the Airola Juvenile Prison.

“As a director I put myself at the service of an idea that came from the inmates of Airola. The relationship with the lawyers, the wait for the sentence, the trepidation of the relatives gathered there, were mixed in them with the vision of an unexpected bond with those who had to decide on a conviction or an acquittal. It is a story that I felt was mysterious, because it contained within it something similar to illusion and hope, it expressed a sentimental vision and that in fact was rooted by the authors-prisoners in their adolescent past. The theme is certainly related to the difference between moral obligation and the exercise of a judicial function, related to the complex relationship that can exist between friendship and objective vision. The result is a bitter story in which the protagonist places his hope for freedom in a moral reckoning that comes from the past. Even if based on an absurdity, I believe that this story has a deeper meaning than it appears, in fact it tries to communicate to us the awareness of a conflict between the strength of human bonds and that of the law”, as stated in the director's notes.

On stage Antonio Braucci, Manfredo Palumbo, the young Raffaele Russo and Cristian Isaia, and again Emanuele Valenti, Domenico Ciruzzi and Anna Lucia Pierro. The black and white photography is by Stefano Falivene.
