Campania, increasing separate collection of paper and cardboard. Data released by the Comieco Consortium.

In 2021, Campania separated and properly recycled over 220.000 tons of paper and cardboard. This is according to Comieco, the National Consortium for the Recovery and Recycling of Cellulose-based Packaging, in its 27th Annual Report on the Separate Collection and Recycling of Paper and Cardboard in Italy, based on preliminary data released by ARPAC last June. Collection increased by approximately 3.600 tons compared to the previous year, but the per capita average of 39,2 kg is still far behind the Southern Italian average (46,9 kg/inhabitant) and the national average (60,8 kg/inhabitant).

"The positive numbers recorded in 2021 in Campania confirm citizens' ever-increasing attention to the environment, even though there is still considerable room for improvement." declares Carlo Montalbetti, General Manager of Comieco.

Despite excellent overall growth, per capita collection can still increase, as can the interception of the cellulose fraction of total waste, which remains at 8,5%. Increasing quantities is important, but doing it well is even more important, avoiding the addition of other materials—i.e., foreign fractions—with paper and cardboard, which can compromise the quality of recycling.

In Campania, Comieco directly managed the recycling of 182.031 tons of paper and cardboard, equal to 81,8% of the total collection. The 465 participating municipalities received payments totaling over €15,5 million. Collection by province: Analyzing the numbers in detail, all provinces recorded an increase in collection compared to 2020. Province of Avellino: more than 13.000 tons of paper and cardboard collected, with a per capita consumption of 33,4 kg; Province of Benevento: approximately 10.000 tons with a per capita consumption of 37,2 kg; - Province of Caserta: almost 33.000 tons of paper and cardboard in total and an average per capita of 36 kg; province of Naples: almost 124.000 tons in total and 41,1 kg is the average collection per citizen; Province of Salerno: just over 42.000 tons of paper and cardboard collected, per capita over 39,2 kg/inhabitant Quantity and quality of separate collection of paper and cardboard in Italy.

At a national level, in 2021 the separate collection of paper and cardboard outlines a situation characterized by a positive trend everywhere. Over 3,6 million tons of cellulose material were separated in total throughout the country with overall municipal collection volumes growing by over 110.000 tons (+3,2%) and the per capita average of the country exceeds 60 kg/inhabitant for the first time.

The Comieco Report shows that for the second consecutive year, Italy has achieved the EU 2030 target for recycling cellulose packaging of 85%, a goal it had already achieved the previous year, 10 years early.
