Campania, Operation “Margherita” by the Carabinieri of the Caserta Agri-food Protection Department: pizzas with DOP and IGP products but it was fake: seizure between Salerno, Ischia and Naples.

They advertised on their menus the use of fresh ingredients that actually turned out to be frozen, as well as PDO and PGI products, while in reality they were using ingredients that weren't registered with the trademark circuit. Essentially, they were upping the quality of their products, but only on paper.

Operation "Margherita," conducted by the Carabinieri of the Agri-food Protection Unit in Caserta and its province, verified the accuracy and authenticity of the information provided to consumers. It revealed that renowned pizzerias—in locations outside the province of Caserta—were using counterfeit ingredients, yet charging high prices as if they were using gourmet ingredients.

And for this reason they have reported the owners of seven well-known gourmet pizzerias for commercial fraud.

The pizzerias reported are located between Salerno, Ischia, and Naples.

But establishments in the Aversa countryside and upper Caserta provinces were also inspected. This time, the attention of the operators led by Colonel Luigi Cortellessa was focused on the emerging sector of "big-name" pizzerias, listed on national food review circuits and quickly gaining a reputation as trendy venues.

During the checks, the Carabinieri also found irregularities in the failure to indicate allergens in the menus and the lack of traceability of some ingredients. Fines of 18 thousand euros were thus imposed and 3 warnings were issued.

20 kilos of various agri-food products were also seized. The same check had been carried out at the end of October
and pizzerias in the Caserta area had been fined. Since then, the establishments have complied and this time they have not been fined.
