Enel promotes 7 projects to recover ancient crafts in Southern Italy. For the restart of internal areas, financed with 1,5 million.

Seven projects to contribute to the social and economic growth of inland areas of Southern Italy, reviving ancient crafts and traditions and promoting the social and employment inclusion of those in need. These projects were selected through the "Nel cuore del sud" call for proposals, promoted by Enel Cuore, the Enel Group's nonprofit organization, and the Fondazione Con il Sud, and aimed at third-sector organizations in Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Puglia, Sardinia, and Sicily.

The selected initiatives will be funded with 1,5 million euros and will support the independence of people with disabilities or at risk of marginalization and hardship, promoting the valorization of the vocations and excellence of the southern inland areas such as tourism, craftsmanship, agriculture and food and wine (1.472 municipalities out of a total of 2.116).

"By launching the "Nel Cuore del Sud" call for proposals, we wanted to support the entities that make our South an excellence for the country and today we celebrate the results with satisfaction." declared Michele Crisostomo, President of Enel and Enel Cuore Onlus "The selected projects represent the best of our tradition and perfectly blend the values of inclusion and innovation, essential to revitalizing Southern Italy and the country as a whole.

The historical moment we are living in requires more than ever unity of purpose, and that is why we cannot afford to leave anyone behind, especially those living with disabilities, fragility, and social and economic marginalization.

"These projects demonstrate something very important: that even the smallest, most remote, and most forgotten places in Southern Italy, often completely undervalued and reluctantly abandoned by young people, have so much to offer if the right opportunities are created., declared Carlo Borgomeo, President of the Con il Sud Foundation.

"Ancient crafts, local traditions, and the specific agricultural and food traditions of a region can become opportunities for economic and social redemption. They can be opportunities for social cohesion and, therefore, growth. This is where a true rebirth for these places can be generated."

The projects will enable the revival of ancient crafts and traditions at risk of extinction, from the construction of dry stone walls (Casarano, province of Lecce) to the artisanal production of libbani (Maratea, province of Potenza), woven from wild 'tagliamani' grass; from loom weaving for a new line of women's clothing using natural yarns (Squillace and Girifalco, province of Catanzaro); to the weaving of natural fibers (Cedrino Valley, province of Nuoro) such as cattail—a marsh plant that grows wild along rivers—to create furnishings as a replacement for plastic; and to the launch of a social tailoring workshop (Galatina, province of Lecce) on a confiscated property, valorizing the ancient craft of the Salento seamstress and embroiderer, reinterpreting ancient knowledge and techniques through modern technologies.

The project also includes the promotion of some local specialties, from the Suscieglio cannellini bean (Sessa Aurunca, Caserta province) to the cereals and legumes of the Alta Murgia (Spinazzola, Barletta-Andria-Trani province), which will be transformed into products for people with eating disorders such as celiac disease and diabetes.
