Mayors remember Angelo Vassallo 12 years after the crime, commemoration in Pollica. The award named after the 'fisherman mayor' was also presented.

The community of Pollica once again remembered its "fisherman mayor," Angelo Vassallo, killed on September 5, 2010, with a memorial service. After a mass in the Church of the Annunziata with family members, the municipal administration led by Stefano Pisani, and many residents, the ceremony moved to the nearby Arena del Mare, where a wreath was laid in the sea to the tune of "Il silenzio."

The ceremony was attended by numerous mayors from across Italy, as well as Legambiente President Stefano Ciafani. The "Angelo Vassallo" award, organized by the Municipality of Pollica and Legambiente, also returned to the commemoration day after being suspended in recent years due to the COVID emergency.

The award was given to Josi Gerardo Della Ragione, mayor of Bacoli, for his fight against "illegal building and the development of the area."

The memory of Vassallo is intertwined with the demand for the truth about his murder, which after 12 years remains unsolved.

Last July, the Salerno prosecutor's office entered in the register of suspects entrepreneurs, members of the Camorra and carabinieri all accused to varying degrees of murder and criminal association aimed at drug trafficking.

For Italian mayors, September 5th is a day of grief and remembrance. Twelve years have passed, but for us, the memory of Angelo Vassallo is as vivid as the first day after the criminal act that took him from his loved ones and the people of Pollica. I still remember the strength of that community, which, together with us mayors, marched through the streets of the town in 2019 to demand justice and truth.

Thus the president of the ANCI Antonio Decaro, who adds: That day we signed a manifesto committing us to defending beauty and legality. Because the assassination of a mayor, beyond a profound wound to his loved ones and his people, is a wound inflicted on the entire country and its representatives. Every moment of Angelo's life contributes to the strength of his memory and his regret: his daily work as mayor, his commitment to serving the community and the region, his strenuous defense of legality against Camorra infiltration, his passion for the beauty and uniqueness of the Cilento Natural Park..

"Years later, Angelo Vasssallo remains a model and a point of reference for us, as he was for all Italian citizens and for international institutions as well. Unfortunately, his death at the hands of criminals also remains a sad example of bad justice. Many years have passed and still the perpetrators and instigators of the crime remain unnamed, despite the fact that the Camorra-related nature of the murder was clear to everyone from the very first moment. Today there are people under investigation. - concludes Decaro - But on the day dedicated to his memory, we mayors once again demand even more forcefully that truth and justice be done. For this reason, too, the ANCI will ask to join the trial as a civil party.
