The most expensive cities in Italy: the Codacons survey. The most expensive for food shopping is Milan.
Have you ever wondered how much you spend on groceries each month? If you thought food prices were too high last year, prices have risen again following the continued rise in inflation over the past few months.
In this article we analyze the survey carried out by Codacons on the cost of living in the 17 largest provinces in Italy, defining a ranking of those in which inflation has hit hardest and, consequently, the price of groceries and services has increased.
In fact, according to data collected by Istat, to date it is estimated that the NIC, or national consumer price index, for the entire community has increased by 7,9% compared to 2021. In particular, food prices have increased by 8,2% over the past year.
In the survey carried out by Codacons, the same type of food was examined, purchased in supermarkets in each province. The basket of food products examined consisted of meat, fish, bread, fruit and vegetables, considering a specific weight of 1 kg. As for prices, these are expressed in euros and refer to the last quarter of 2021.
What is causing the price increase?
The consequences of rising food prices cannot be attributed to a single factor; many factors must be taken into consideration.

What do the results tell us?
In which city does it cost the most to buy food?
The results shown in the graph below show that the average cost in Italy is €87,19, and that the most expensive city in Italy for grocery shopping is Milan, with a total cost of approximately €99,24. In second and third place, respectively, are Aosta with €97,30 and Trieste with €95,50. Conversely, in Naples, €67,58 is sufficient, making Maradona's city the most affordable in terms of grocery shopping—about 43% less than Milan.
Analyzing the data above, the price disparity between Southern and Northern Italy in terms of food expenditure is evident.
The most expensive cities in terms of prices of services and general goods
On the contrary, if we analyze the prices of the services and goods illustrated in the graph below, such as the dentist, the gynecologist, the waste disposal fee, breakfast at the bar, a haircut at the hairdresser and others, this disparity disappears. In fact, the data has confirmed that, when we talk in terms of services and goods, Naples is the most expensive city (749.17 euros) while the average Italian cost is 650.70 euros. Although the prices of many services are lower, the amount of the waste disposal fee to be paid is significantly higher than in other Italian cities.
In conclusion, considering both sectors, the city that is overall the most expensive is Milan (€835.65), followed by Cagliari (€800.50) and Naples (€816.75). Pescara and Catanzaro are instead the cities where the price of groceries and that of services and goods in general are the lowest.
