The trial into the death of Salvatore Giordano, the 14-year-old student from Marano di Napoli killed by a large fragment of a frieze that broke off from the Galleria Umberto I in Naples on July 5, 2014, concluded with five defendants convicted and one acquitted. Naples' sole judge, Barbara Mendia, convicted the condominium managers involved in the tragedy and two municipal employees. Salvatore was struck in the head while walking along Via Toledo with friends (one of whom was injured) and died in hospital four days later. Giovanni Spagnuolo, a municipal manager, was sentenced to two years in prison, while Franco Annunziata, a municipal technician, was given a sentence of one year and two months. Administrator Mariano Bruno, as was Elio Notarbartolo, was sentenced to two years, while Marco Fresa received a sentence of one year and two months.
The judge, however, acquitted Giuseppe Africano, while the last defendant died during the judicial process.

He also recognized compensation (to be quantified in a separate hearing) also towards the Municipality of Naples, he constituted himself as a civil party in the trial. Also recognized compensation for the young man who was injured.
"The Municipality of Naples - commented the lawyer Sergio Pisani, legal representative of the Giordano family - He was not entitled to any compensation because, in my personal opinion, he is the main person responsible for the tragedy: and, in fact, his accused employees were convicted."The reasons for the sentence will be made known within 90 days.
