New signs and speed cameras on the Naples seafront. Demonstration for Elvira today
“We have immediately reactivated a program to redo the horizontal road signs that will be completed throughout the city in the coming weeks. We will also review mechanisms to ensure better maintenance and we will implement tools such as speed cameras, but it will not be possible to have a very widespread network due to the conformation of the city.”
This is what the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, said in reference to the actions that the Municipality will implement following the death of a young woman in the night between Sunday and Monday, hit by a hit-and-run motorbike on Via Caracciolo. Manfredi also reported a meeting with the commander of the municipal police, Ciro Esposito, “to work on a road safety plan to improve our control systems”.
“It's a topic that I will also bring to the Prefecture – concluded the mayor – because when we talk about security there is a very important role of the Municipality but also of the other forces of the State". Justice!"– is the cry that rose loudly on Via Caracciolo on the morning of September 2.
Where Elvira Zibra was hit and killed, whose funeral will be held on Saturday 3 September in Piedigrotta, a demonstration was held to demand justice for her and her brother Mustafha, also a victim of a hit-and-run driver. In addition to the families of the two boys, citizens, representatives and activists of Europa Verde and also La Radiazza participated.
“They were two very good boys, workers, loved by the whole community. They killed them in such a horrible way. We want justice. The murderers of my children and their families have never apologized to us”, the mother of the two boys says with emotion. The other relatives also spoke of their pain and anger.
“We need re-education and certain punishments.” – comments Don Maurizio Patriciello who took part in the demonstration- “There needs to be change.” “I saw Elvira die before my eyes. Accidents can happen but this was not, this was murder. Someone who goes 200km/h and does a wheelie is a criminal.”– explains a colleague of the 34-year-old victim of the hit-and-run motorbike – “The absurd thing is that his death was for nothing, here nothing has changed despite my reports and the police look the other way”.
“We must fight a tough battle on this matter. They have exterminated a family. These are not kids who do pranks, those who kill others, destroying families, racing madly through the streets on motorcycles and cars are criminals. Elvira and Mustafa are two victims of street crime and we have the duty not to leave their family alone, which must be helped and supported, for which in addition to a fundraiser we will ask for an emergency procedure. Whoever killed them must pay and pay dearly, must end up in jail for a very long time and certainly not stay at home. It is time to restore the right order of things and to protect good people, victims, and to condemn criminals and delinquents. We also ask the Municipality to adopt urgent measures to stop hit-and-run drivers and combat high speeds that have claimed numerous victims in this area and despite this nothing has ever been done.”– declared the Regional Councilor of Europa Verde Francesco Emilio Borrelli with the regional co-president of Sole che ride Fiorella Zabatta.
