No Covid restrictions for the first time since 2019. The celebrations of San Gennaro in Naples Cathedral on Monday, September 19, the feast day of the city's patron saint, will return to "full capacity" after two years in which access to the Neapolitan cathedral was limited for health reasons.

September 19th is also the day on which the miracle of the liquefaction of the blood of San Gennaro is traditionally awaited, one of the three days of the year on which it occurs (the other two days are the Saturday before the first Sunday in May and December 16th). The celebrations, presided over by the Metropolitan Archbishop of Naples, Monsignor Domenico Battaglia, will begin on Sunday, September 18th at 17.30:XNUMX pm with the Vigil Rite of First Vespers.

The San Gennaro Diocesan Committee will offer oil for the votive lamp to the Holy Martyr. Taking part in the procession will be the canons of the Metropolitan Chapter and the prelates of the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro, a delegation from the Committee, including President Carmineantonio Esposito, and the torchbearers of the "relays of faith."

After a brief prayer, the torches will be lit in the three places of reference in the life of the Holy Martyr (the Sanctuary of San Gennaro in Pozzuoli, the Catacombs of San Gennaro in Capodimonte, and the Church of San Gennaro in Vomero) and will arrive at the Cathedral for the lighting of the votive lamp placed before the relics of San Gennaro at the beginning of First Vespers.

At 6:30 pm, the celebration of evening Mass will follow, presided over by the new parish priest of the Cathedral, Don Vittorio Sommella.

On Monday, September 19th, the feast day of San Gennaro, the Cathedral will open at 7.30:9.15 a.m. and remain open all day. At XNUMX:XNUMX a.m., Archbishop Domenico Battaglia will visit the Treasury Chapel. Together with the abbot, Monsignor Vincenzo de Gregorio, and the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi (president of the Deputation of San Gennaro), he will open the safe where the vials of blood are kept.

The archbishop will then carry the ampoules to the main altar of the Cathedral where he will preside over the Eucharistic concelebration. If the "miracle" of the liquefaction of the blood occurs, he will announce it to those present and, walking down the central nave, will go outside the Cathedral to display the ampoules containing the blood to the faithful and the city.

Further Eucharistic celebrations on Monday, September 19th, are scheduled for 12.30:18.30 pm and 16.30:27 pm. The latter will be presided over by an auxiliary bishop and preceded by prayers and veneration, beginning at XNUMX:XNUMX pm. The Thanksgiving Octave will continue until September XNUMXth.

At 9:12.30 a.m., Mass will be celebrated in the Treasury Chapel, presided over by a prelate. Afterward, the vial containing the blood will be carried to the main altar, entrusted to a canon for veneration by the faithful until 16.30:18.30 p.m. Prayers and veneration will resume at XNUMX:XNUMX p.m. until XNUMX:XNUMX p.m., when Holy Mass will be celebrated.
