Holidays continue in September, suitcase ready for 12 million. For more than 4 Italians out of 10 they will be the main ones of the summer

In September, 12 million Italians will take a vacation: 9,9 million in Italy, 2,1 million abroad. These are the data from the Confturismo-Confcommercio Observatory, which measures Italians' propensity to travel, based on a survey conducted between August 25 and 30. Despite expressing concern for the future, with the propensity to travel in the fall dropping to 66 points on a scale of 0-100, 4 points less than in 2021 and a full 8 points lower than in 2019, according to the Observatory, Italians want to take advantage of the tail end of summer.

A positive September, concluding a summer season in which, overall from June to the end of the current month, 30 million people will have taken at least one holiday.

For more than four out of ten Italians, it will be their main summer vacation, lasting an average of five days. 4% of Italians choose the seaside as their destination, followed by the mountains at 10%, while art cities, large cities, and small villages together account for another 5% of their preferred destinations. 33% of Italians will stay within Italy, favoring destinations in Tuscany first, followed by Sicily, Sardinia, and Campania.

Abroad, the destinations that dominated throughout the summer remain the same: Spain, France, Greece, and then Croatia. The average expected spending by respondents is also good, at €720 per person, ranging from nearly €300 for a weekend getaway to over €1.280 for an all-inclusive vacation of seven or more days. The decision to leave in September appears to be a conscious choice, not a fallback or a constraint: the two most cited motivations among the sample are the desire to "disconnect" for a short break—especially among the 7-34 age group—and the genuine pleasure of traveling in the low season, when others don't, which is prevalent among those over 54.

The lowest prices are taken into consideration by only 14%, while the percentage of those who explicitly stated that they had not been able to afford a holiday in the previous months due to unaffordable costs is limited to 11%.
