A fight broke out yesterday evening, shortly after 19:XNUMX p.m., in Taranto prison, on the third floor, in a section reserved for prisoners with final sentences.

The residents of Taranto and Lecce clashed, hitting each other with anything they could get their hands on, including table legs, which they deliberately tore apart. This was reported by Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police. Many were injured and bruised, including two inmates and three members of the Penitentiary Police who required emergency medical care. Order was restored around 21.30:XNUMX PM.

"Unfortunately," says De Fazio, "government policy, beyond the proclamations and pompous declarations, continues to ignore prisons, which in reality continue to be abandoned to their own devices.

Disturbances are daily, as are the number of assaults and injuries among the Penitentiary Police, so much so that the Department of Penitentiary Administration keeps the numerical data secret for reasons of public order and security.

In the Taranto prison, with approximately 750 inmates present out of 500 available places, there were fewer than 15 prison police officers on duty last night, only 2 on the floor where the riots broke out, made up of 3 sections and over 200 inmates", explains the secretary of the UILPA PP.

"In the framework described - teacher - where inmates were kept open due to so-called dynamic surveillance, it was possible to restore order and, so to speak, security in the facility only thanks to the great professionalism and sense of duty of the prison police, who responded with officers who were off duty and specifically recalled. However, it is quite clear that the prison system is incapable of fulfilling any of the functions assigned to it.

It doesn't re-educate, it doesn't stop violence, it doesn't prevent illicit contact with the outside world, it allows trafficking of all kinds, and it doesn't protect people from violence and death. He emphasizes that 60 inmates committed suicide in 2022.
