In Naples new facade of the church of Santa Luciella, protector of the eyes. In the hypogeum 'Skull with ears' and among the votive offerings also Spiderman
The church of Santa Luciella ai Librai in the old town of Naples, also famous for the 'skull with ears' housed in its hypogeum, now has a new facade created thanks to the collaboration between public and private operators "united – we read in the press note – from the desire to take care of and enhance the historical and artistic heritage of Naples and to support the younger generations".
“The church founded shortly before 1327, is located in the heart of the historic center of Naples – remember – over time it was taken into custody by the pipernieri, ancient artists who sculpted hard stones who, accustomed to working with a chisel and hammer, fearing that the splinters could get stuck in their eyes, began to venerate Saint Lucia, the protector of sight, deciding, therefore, to dedicate this place to her”.
Santa Luciella, abandoned for more than 30 years, is now managed by the Respiriamo Arte Association (which is one of the Associations gathered in the “Rete del Pio Monte della Misericordia”) founded by a group of young Neapolitan graduates, specialized in the artistic and literary fields, who have given life to the recovery and enhancement both from the point of view of tourist development and social inclusion.
Thousands of visitors are attracted by the ancient church and its hypogeum where today among skulls, silver votive offerings for graces received and notes with prayers of intercession for the 'Saint of the eyes' there is also a small Spiderman doll. “For us it is a sign of the times. A modern ex-voto left by a child – explained one of the animators of the Association respiriamo arte – perhaps to ask Saint Luciella to answer one of her prayers”.
