the first edition of Women in Music, a review of female music, organized by the Brodo Cultural Association, with the artistic direction of Viola Bufano, with the moral patronage of the Municipality of Naples.
Women in Music will take place from October 21st to December 16th at the Fondazione Quartieri Spagnoli, better known as FOQUS, in the heart of the Spanish Quarter, at Via Portacarrese a Montecalvario, 69.
The festival includes three musical events on Friday evenings, one per month, from October to December and will focus on some of the most important singers on the Neapolitan music scene.
The festival will open with Ebbanesis, followed by Fede'n'Marlen, and finally Mujeres Creando.
The exhibition will take place in the enchanting sixteenth-century courtyard of FOQUS.
This is a one-of-a-kind space, “open but covered”: since autumn 2019, in fact, the cloister has been covered by a scenic transparent vault made of ecological material that allows entertainment and increases the liveability of the location even in cold and rainy periods, protecting the seated public from atmospheric agents, guaranteeing the same natural light and thus offering a unique and evocative experience to users.
FOQUS is easily reachable on foot from Via Toledo (just 200 meters on foot, following Via Portacarrese a Montecalvario from the entrance on Via Toledo), or by metro line 1, Toledo stop, Montecalvario exit.
Below is the detailed program of the event:
FRIDAY OCTOBER 21
EBBANESIS
A web phenomenon, but with a lot of musical substance: in June 2017, the Ebbanesis duo was born online, composed of Viviana Cangiano and Serena Pisa. Two voices and a guitar, who began to appear on Facebook with intriguing reinterpretations of classic Neapolitan songs but also famous rock songs sung in dialect: this is the case of Carmela, who has exceeded 400.000 views and especially Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, which has registered over 2.000.000, becoming a real media case. The Ebbanesis page itself is followed by over 150.000 followers from all over the world. Requests for concerts arrive from Italy but also from France, Germany, Russia and the United Arab Emirates. In these foreign countries, Ebbanesis have performed successfully in the cities of Santa Lucia (Femin'arte Corsica), Munich (Gasteig – Kleiner Konzertsaal), Moscow (Teatrium) and Riyadh, where for the first time two European women stepped on stage for a public performance. On January 24, 2020, Soundfly released their second album Transleit, the title of their new show, a summary of their mastery and their repertoire, recorded in the Auditorium Novecento in Naples, one of the oldest recording studios in Europe. Massimo Ranieri wanted them as regular guests in the program “Qui e adesso” for the four episodes broadcast on Rai Tre where they interacted with Arturo Brachetti in a magical representation of sounds and images.
FRIDAY 18 NOVEMBER
FEDE'N'MARLEN in full band
Fede 'n' Marlen are back live with their third album "Terra di madonne" produced by Fullheads and Arealive. The Neapolitan duo composed of Marilena Vitale, voice and guitar, and Federica Ottombrino, voice, guitar and accordion, returns with this new work to their essential sounds. A journey through eight unreleased songs, embellished by the artistic direction of Massimo De Vita (BLINDUR) inside their two worlds, made of fragility, desires and heartfelt appeals to humanity. A little pearl, as it has been defined by critics, the presence of the cover half translated into Spanish and arranged only with the double bass of Ferruccio Spinetti (Avion Travel), Totò's "Malafemmena",
After more than 500 dates throughout Italy they return home on a tour of their native land.
FRIDAY 16 DECEMBER
WOMEN CREATING
After numerous live shows around the country with a few trips abroad, in 2018 the album by the band Mujeres Creando was released entitled “Le stelle sono rare”, an album dedicated to the feeling and the most musical theme in the world, love. Ten tracks, nine of which are unreleased, in which this band composed of five musicians, all women and all Neapolitan, mixes the sound of their instruments (violin, accordion, cross-over guitar, percussion, loop station) and their voice in a refined ethno-pop amalgam, rich in suggestions and stories with a Mediterranean flavour. From nouveau tango to gipsy jazz, to contemporary world music, among the notes of Mujeres Creando you can hear the sweetness of Cesaria Évora's music, but also the refinement of Caetano Veloso or the intensity of Susana Baca. There is no shortage of references to the great Italian singer-songwriter, first of all Fabrizio De André with his Anime salve. But also, why not, Vinicio Capossela, Avion Travel and Pino Daniele. And a certain Mediterranean tradition. While the arrangements are influenced by the deep listening of the French tradition and the music of Eastern Europe, Klezmer, and Balkans. With “Le Stelle Sono Rare” the Mujeres win the Web Social Contest award of Voci Per la Libertà – Amnesty International and above all they win the award of the New IMAIE which starts an 8-date tour around Italy.
The entrance is at 20:30 pm and the concert will start at 21:00 pm and the contribution is 20 euros per person.
