Pallagrello, the Bourbon wine, revives at the Royal Palace of Caserta. Second harvest in the vineyards restored by Tenuta Fontana
The Bourbons spoke enthusiastically of them, describing them as wines “among the best in the Kingdom, both for their quality and nature, as well as for the pleasant sensation they awaken in the palate”. So appreciated that King Ferdinand IV wanted to grow grapes in the gardens of the Royal Palace of Caserta. Even today, the labels of Pallagrello, originating from the homonymous vine, are a unique example of Campanian oenology: also from the point of view of environmental sustainability if, as is true, in 2019, the Tenuta Fontana winery in Pietrelcina (BN) won a public tender designed for the restoration of the royal vineyards in the San Silvestro forest, inside the Caserta royal palace, already a WWF oasis.
The recovery of the vineyard began with a preliminary study of the soil to choose the rootstock most suited to the type of terrain and the exposures present, followed by the planning of the works and organic agro-environmental management of the vineyard itself. A project that has therefore made it possible to replant the rows of Pallagrello black and white, now cultivated according to the organic principle: present and past intertwined both in the approach of the cultivation method and in that of the refinement, which takes place in terracotta amphorae, useful for preserving the organoleptic characteristics of the vine.
The real anecdote instead inspired the name of the bottles, Oro Re, which had its first harvest in 2021 and, a few months later, its debut at Vinitaly in Verona. Now it's doing it again with the 2022 vintage.
