The autopsy will clarify the causes of death of a newborn baby who arrived last night at the Santobono hospital in Naples, likely suffering from a respiratory crisis.
The little boy was first transported to the hospital in Nola and then transferred to the pediatric hospital in Naples, where he died around three o'clock. The Carabinieri of San Vitaliano, who are investigating the incident coordinated by the magistrates of the Nola Prosecutor's Office, were alerted by 112, in turn contacted by the personnel of 118, who intervened in an apartment in Traversa Cittadella.
The newborn's mother called for help: the woman noticed her son's breathing problems and raised the alarm. Now, by order of the investigating magistrate, the baby's body has been seized for an autopsy. The child was the youngest of four children of a couple originally from Pomigliano d'Arco who moved to the center of Nola a little over a year ago.
The mayor of San Vitaliano: it is a pain that affects the entire community
“The tragic death of the one-year-old child is a pain that affects the entire community,” said the mayor of San Vitaliano, Pasquale Raimo. “The news of this tragic death took us by surprise,” he added, “and has shaken the entire community that is now mourning the loss of this little boy. Now all we can do is wait for the results of the autopsy ordered to understand the causes that led to the child’s death.”
According to what has been learned, the family never turned to the Municipality for help, nor had they been reported to social services for any difficulties. All hypotheses regarding this tragic death are being examined by investigators. It has not been ruled out that it could be a case of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), the so-called “cot death or sudden death” of the newborn, a sudden phenomenon that can occur in children under one year of age.
According to statistics, the highest number of cases occurs when the baby is between one and five months old and in any case SIDS is considered one of the main causes of death in the first year of life. On the night between September 28 and 29, however, a ten-month-old baby girl, also from the Neapolitan hinterland, arrived at Santobono with intoxication from a psychoactive substance present in cannabis.
The little girl had suffered convulsions due to the accidental ingestion of drug residues. Her conditions had appeared serious at first, but fortunately, thanks to the doctors' care, they improved even though for several days the little girl had been in danger of dying.

According to the reconstruction, the little boy had not been breathing well for several hours but then the crisis became more acute, his breathing became a rattle and for this reason the mother called 118. It was she, therefore, who contacted the emergency services and doctors and nurses in turn contacted 112. The child's conditions were already critical. Death could have natural causes, but to exclude any other circumstances an autopsy on the body was ordered.
