Moments of tension in the Carinola prison, Caserta, where a foreign prisoner tried to cut his throat in front of the officers.
The Autonomous Union of Penitentiary Police (Sappe) reported the serious episode. According to the reconstruction of the facts, the man began to self-harm, causing deep cuts.
The staff immediately intervened to try to bring the man back to reason, accompanying him to the infirmary. Once treated, however, the inmate demanded a further massive dose of therapy, going so far as to threaten to cut his throat with a razor blade.
Despite the persuasion, the man, with the razor blade around his neck, would have attempted the gesture and only the timely intervention of the agents would have prevented the worst, even if the policemen in the intervention would have been injured. On the doctor's advice, it was necessary to take him to the hospital for a TSO, later converted to voluntary hospitalization.
“The serious incident highlights the security priorities that the women and men of the Penitentiary Police deal with on a daily basis, especially with respect to subjects with obvious psychiatric problems”. Speaking is Donato Capece, general secretary of Sappe, who underlines how “following the closure of the Judicial Psychiatric Hospitals, many people with psychiatric problems are confined in the country's prisons and often they are the protagonists of serious critical events”.
