The documentary “Enrico Caruso: a voice for eternity” has been online on Arte in Italiano since October 1st. An opportunity to learn about the Neapolitan talent who conquered the world and to celebrate the opening of the new opera season of the cultural channel ARTE, created in collaboration with 22 of the main European opera houses and festivals.
Bringing opera into the homes of Europeans: with this goal, the European cultural channel ARTE launches the 2022/2023 season of its digital opera offering “ARTE Opera Season” (arte.tv/opera), available from 6 October. To celebrate the opening of the season, Arte in Italiano (arte.tv/it) is making available the documentary “Enrico Caruso: una voce per l'eternità”, dedicated to the Neapolitan talent who conquered the world with his golden voice. The tenor, who at just 27 years old signed a contract at La Scala in Milan, also arrived in New York in 1903, to perform at the Metropolitan Opera in Aida. But the many lights of the stage were followed by shadows, such as pressure from the public, relationships strained by distance with soprano Ada Giachetti, and blackmail by the Mafia. With testimonies from biographer Francesco Canessa, music critic Jürgen Kesting and composer Micha Hamel, the documentary retraces the epic of a timeless Italian voice, between lights, shadows and mysterious events, such as the tour in Havana in 1920, when he escaped an assassination attempt.
The 2022/2023 ARTE Opera Season
The arrival of “Enrico Caruso: a voice for eternity” on the platform celebrates the opening of the 2022/2023 season of ARTE Opera, which offers exceptional productions, great classics, new releases and rediscoveries from the greatest European opera scenes. Since 2018, ARTE has curated its own digital opera season, in collaboration with the main European opera houses and festivals. Every month, new productions are proposed, available free online – on the website arte.tv/it or on the ARTE apps for smart TVs, Fire TV, Apple TV and mobile devices – throughout Europe and subtitled in 6 languages (English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Polish), a unique case in the world.
The new season boasts the collaboration of 22 European partners from 13 countries, having been enriched by the presence of the Polish National Opera (Teatr Wielki – Opera Narodowa) from Warsaw.
It starts on 6 October 2022 at 20 pm (CEST), live from the Opéra Comique in Paris, with Laurent Pelly's new production of Léo Delibe's Lakmé, under the musical direction of Raphaël Pichon, with Sabine Devieilhe, world-famous soprano.
In the fall, audiences will be treated to an eagerly awaited production at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin: Richard Wagner’s masterpiece, The Ring of the Nibelung, an opera of power and intrigue staged by Russian conductor Dmitri Tcherniakov, with Christian Thielemann conducting. Tcherniakov will also stage another visually stunning opera: Prokofiev’s War and Peace from the Bavarian State Opera, with Vladimir Jurowski conducting.
Also starring in ARTE’s new opera season is soprano Julie Fuchs, who will make her debut in two roles: as Cleopatra in Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Dutch National Opera and alongside Benjamin Bernheim as Juliet in Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette at the Zurich Opera. In July, she will also sing the title role in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea at the Gran Teatre del Liceu.
Numerous performances are also planned for the coming months from the opera houses of Brussels (Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie), Paris (Opéra national de Paris), Wexford (Wexford Festival Opera) and Vienna (Wiener Staatsoper).
