“Mario” by Andrea Bagnasco and Caterina Nonis is the winning short film of the fourth edition of Moviemmece, the film festival of biodiversity, food and cultures held from 25 to 29 October in Torre del Greco and Napoli Est.
The short film tells the story of a construction worker struggling with economic and food insecurity who found his personal oasis of peace in a vegetable garden created between the buildings of a former factory and the edge of the Dora River in Turin.
The winner of Moviemmece 2022 was decreed by the technical jury composed of Alberto Capasso, Santa De Santis, Guido Lombardi and Vincenzo Pirozzi.
“With this short – explained the directors Andrea Bagnasco and Caterina Nonis – we aim to investigate the personal and political reasons that inspired Mario’s garden project and to show how this space has contributed to creating a community and a network of solidarity. We look at the garden and Mario’s resilience in the face of the threat posed by the increasingly frequent flooding of the river. We hope to put an anti-capitalist model at the center, to offer viewers an inspiration and a blueprint for implementing ecological practices in their lives”.
For the international section, the winner is “Covid Love” by Dutch director Rene Nuijens. Made in the time of Covid, when the entire Dutch film industry was facing an unwanted pause, the short, starring Harry Piekema among others, tells a love story born and wrecked during the pandemic, during a dinner based on gourmet grilled products where the rules against the pandemic and safety come first.

The Schools jury awarded “Qualcosa nel buio” by Alessandro Zappalà, a video-poem about feeling alone, inadequate, about not recognizing ourselves in the society that surrounds us, a story entrusted to the thoughts of a fragile boy, searching for something in the darkness.

The Youth jury instead decreed the victory of “I feed you” by Teresa Gusso, a short film that deals with the relationship between mother and child, between sharing, communicating and taking care of each other. All through food.

A special mention was given in memory of Ciccio Capozzi, a passionate promoter of cinema and community builder, very close to the festival staff and recently deceased, to “Verdeacciaio” by Camilla Morino and Eugenio Goria, an investigation into Parco Dora, a disused industrial plant in the city of Turin, now transformed into a public space.

Moviemmece, organized by the associations Fuori dal Seminato, Art33 and Le Tribù, brings to the stage quality cinema connected to the main theme of the festival: food, told as a vehicle of knowledge and intercultural exchange, a tool for safeguarding territories and cultures, a place of meeting and knowing the other. The cinefestival, in addition to the competition for Italian and foreign directors, proposed evenings of screenings of international films, theatrical performances, meetings with associations and show cooking, initiatives, all free, with a low environmental impact and a high social impact.
