Italy, about 50 deaths on the roads in the last weekend. Asaps, accident situation increasingly out of control
The second weekend of October saw 45 deaths on Italian roads: in the 72 hours examined by Asaps, the Polstrada Supporters Association, 7 people in a minibus (the A4 massacre), 14 motorists, 16 motorcyclists, one victim in a minicar and 7 pedestrians lost their lives.
“We have been dealing with road accidents for many years, but never before have we recorded such a high number of victims in an autumn weekend, not even in summer, and even higher than the worst summer weekends”, comments President Giordano Biserni. Among the fatal accidents, 27 occurred on state, regional or provincial roads, 5 on motorways. Vehicle evasion without the involvement of third parties was the cause of 18 fatal accidents.
Of the 45 victims, twenty were under 35, the oldest was 73. There were 9 deaths in Veneto, 8 in Piedmont, 5 in Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna, 4 in Tuscany, 3 in Lazio and Puglia, 2 in Campania, Trentino Alto Adige and Sicily, 1 in Friuli Venezia Giulia and Basilicata.
“This weekend with truly scary data – underlines Biserni – it is the confirmation of an accident situation that appears increasingly out of control. There is a lack of detailed analysis of the surveys carried out by all police forces, including the Local Police who carry out most of the surveys.
There is a lack of information campaigns on road safety, which always comes long after the other cracks in the field of safety in general. We also witness a constant decrease in patrols on the roads while a reinforcement of controls on state and provincial arteries would be needed.
We have been witnessing for some time an increasingly widespread 'remote control' with the help of electronics, very useful, but which does not intercept alcohol and drug use while driving, use of cell phones, alteration of tachographs, failure to use seat belts. Politics? Absent without justification”.
