Naples, San Carlo trains inmates in theater professions. Workshops and educational activities dedicated to inmates have started at the San Carlo theater, thanks to the memorandum of understanding between the Foundation and the G. Salvia prison in Naples-Poggioreale.
Led by qualified personnel from the Lirico di Napoli, in fact, the young people have begun to attend specialized training courses related to stage professions, training for the professional profiles of Electrician, Machinist, Prop Maker, Theatrical Tailor, Administrative Activities Assistant, each lasting 200 hours.
Then, on November 4th, the prison church will be transformed into a stage and 'Cavalleria' will be performed, a theatrical show by maestro Carlo Morelli that will have the prisoners themselves as protagonists.
“We cannot consider prison as something external to our community – underlines the mayor of Naples and president of the Teatro di San Carlo Foundation, Gaetano Manfredi – the G. Salvia prison is fully integrated into the fabric of the city and, as such, must communicate with all institutions, first and foremost the cultural ones, with a view to a recovery process that has as its ultimate goal precisely reintegration into society”.
“The positive effect of cultural activities for the recovery of prisoners and their reintegration into society is now universally recognized, which is why I am particularly happy that two city institutions such as the Teatro San Carlo and the Casa Circondariale G. Salvia work together on inclusion projects that not only favor the reintegration of prisoners themselves but that have a wider impact on the good of society”, says the superintendent of San Carlo, Stèphane Lissner.
“Networking the Poggioreale prison and the city's largest cultural institution is a very important result – explains the director of the prison, Carlo Berdini – and that is why I am particularly pleased with this memorandum of understanding and especially with the launch, in this implementation phase, of professional training courses that promote reintegration into society. I would like to express special thanks to Patrizia Mirra, president of the Surveillance Court of Naples, for the support given to this initiative which I hope can be the beginning of a broader path”.
“For San Carlo, social commitment remains a priority and this memorandum of understanding confirms our desire to increasingly be an institution at the service of the city – adds the general manager of the Neapolitan Massimo, Emmanuela Spedaliere – theater, music and in general all artistic activities are an essential tool not only for social reintegration but above all for the psycho-physical well-being of the person. I would like to thank all the employees of the Foundation for their great availability and sensitivity in welcoming these young people and starting them on a path of knowledge of the professions of theater”.
