A monograph dedicated to one of the most extraordinary singers of the early seventeenth century, Barbara Strozzi. Scandalous in her artistic freedom in the Venice of the literary academies. Seven books of her compositions have survived, published between 1644 and 1664. They are collections of Madrigals, Arias, Ariettes, Duets, profane Cantatas and a single book of sacred compositions, the “Sacri musicali affetti”, from '55.
She set to music not only texts by poets such as the Neapolitan Giambattista Marino, lyrics by her father Giulio Strozzi and other Venetian academics, but also texts composed by herself, through which one can sometimes see the intent to challenge the clichés about the female gender still present in a Venice in which, however, more than in any other city on the Peninsula, one could now breathe an air of secularism and modernity.

Her musical and literary education was encouraged and cared for by her father Giulio who made her frequent the most prestigious circles of the cultural Venice of those times and directed her to the school of Francesco Cavalli. In the following years not only her fame as a singer, but also her activity as a composer grew so much that she was considered the most prolific of all the composers of secular music in Venice in the mid-600th century.
