The Strega Poetry Prize is born, the winner in October 2023. In May, five. In the scientific committee Magrelli, Calandrone
The Strega Poetry Prize debuts. Ten years after the establishment of the Strega Youth Prize and the European Strega Prize, a new important piece is added to the constellations of awards of the Strega Prize, without forgetting the one dedicated to Girls and Boys, which put the promotion of reading at the center and meet the interest of an increasingly broad and stratified audience.
Promoted by the Maria and Goffredo Bellonci Foundation and Strega Alberti Benevento in collaboration with Bper Banca, the Strega Poetry Prize will be awarded annually to a book of poetry written in Italian, published in its first edition between March 1 of the previous year and February 28 of the current year (for the first year, the terms of validity are January 2022-February 2023).
The Scientific Committee is composed of Maria Grazia Calandrone, Andrea Cortellessa, Mario Desiati, Elisa Donzelli, Roberto Galaverni, Valerio Magrelli, Melania Mazzucco, Stefano Petrocchi, Laura Pugno, Antonio Riccardi, Enrico Testa and Gian Mario Villalta and will have the task of selecting the five finalist works, which will be announced in May.
While a large Jury, composed of cultural personalities, will determine the winning work in October. The members of the Scientific Committee and the Jury will remain in office for one year and may be reappointed.
Presented on October 26 at the Colosseum Archaeological Park, in the Curia Iulia headquarters in the Roman Forum, with a tribute to the poets Patrizia Cavalli and Biancamaria Frabotta, and in the Milo De Angelis room, the Strega Poetry Prize responds to the editorial liveliness of recent years around poetry with a growth of approximately 20% of published titles, according to the 2022 Report of the Italian Publishers Association.
And social networks have become a vast sharing ground that generates real literary cases, followed also by the younger public. "We are now approaching with respect another form of literary production, perhaps the most elevated, in the belief that there is much to do for the promotion of poetry", said Giovanni Solimine, president of the Bellonci Foundation, at the presentation.
