New Collapse at the Cemetery, Maresca: “Nothing Happened in 9 Months”

Share

NNaples. "Nine months and nothing has been done by the City of Naples. Even the dead can no longer rest in peace."

Catello Maresca, opposition city councilor, declared this in a note regarding the latest collapse at the Poggioreale cemetery. “It was last January 5, when the chapels of the Confraternities of the Immaculate Conception and San Gioacchino and Bianchi dei Dottori di Maria degli Angeli and San Giovanni Battista della Disciplina collapsed at the Poggioreale cemetery,” recalls Maresca.

And then he adds: “A tragedy experienced by hundreds of families (only 200 have formed a committee), who for a good 9 months have been denied the right to mourn their loved ones and to bring flowers to their graves”.

"Months and months of council committee meetings, inspections by technicians and councilors of Palazzo San Giacomo, investigations and expert reports by the Prosecutor's Office to ascertain responsibilities - he continues - have slowed down the reopening of the area in question. There seemed to have been a turning point in July, but since then only promises upon promises from the Municipality (on September 12, the Monumental Cemetery was reopened to the public, but the collapsed chapels are inaccessible and cordoned off), after the many torchlight processions, protests and commemorations by the relatives of those who rest in those burial niches".

“Even our requests and our institutional protests were of no avail – the opposition councilor attacks – The Municipality is absent and the result is that those chapels continue to suffer further collapses, as happened yesterday, so much so as to push the families of the deceased to take to the streets again on October 5th. Exactly 9 months after the collapse. Our solidarity and total closeness to them against an insensitive and absent Municipality”, he concludes.
