“Don't leave us alone”. This is the cry of the little students of Melito who, together with their parents, demonstrated outside the Marino Guarano middle school.
It is the institute where last week the body of the teacher Marcello Toscano was found in a flowerbed not far from the entrance of the institute. They are the ones who address a message to the State, asking for the attention of the institutions.
“We want certainty, safe school,” reads a sign signed by students in 2C. Students in 2G, one of the classes where Toscano taught, left a message outside the entrance to the building: “It should be a safe place for us students. Goodbye Prof. Toscano, we will never forget you. We love you.”
“That stab wound didn't just kill the professor, that stab wound affected the entire city of Melito,” says one of the mothers who gathered outside Marino Guarano this morning to call for interventions to ensure the safety and protection of their children. A peaceful and silent demonstration involving several dozen parents.
“Not only the children, but also we parents are shouting this cry for help: do not leave us alone. The spotlight must not go out, but must remain on,” Manuela Del Frate, a member of the parents’ committee, explained to Dire. One of her children had been a student of Toscano and both she and the boy have fond memories of the teacher.
The young students of Melito ask for a safety guard
“We are asking for a security presence, an increase in law enforcement for the Melito area and in particular for this school complex because it covers a border area where there is a very difficult audience, it is an area with a high crime rate.
The kids – Del Frate continues – are worried that something could happen inside the school, as has already happened. But we mothers try to reassure them in every way. Unfortunately we are witnessing an increase in micro and macro crime, the situation is out of control.
There is no staff that can respond to this request for control and, furthermore, the kids have lost their sense of reality after two and a half years of pandemic. They are unable to experience school serenely as it used to be”.
