Luxury resort on the beach of Ascea: 'The Pope responds to the Vassallo Foundation'. The case of the Ascea eco-monster, owned by the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania, transformed from a religious institute to a luxury resort on the beach
The President of the Foundation “Angelo Vassallo Fisherman Mayor”, Dario Vassallo: “In my letter to Pope Francis I asked to carry out the appropriate checks regarding the construction of the resort on the beach of Velia, in a structure that was used by the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania to accommodate students and prayer groups. We will defend our Cilento against any form of speculation”.
The case of the Ascea eco-monster, owned by the Diocese of Vallo della Lucania, transformed from a religious institute into a luxury beach resort, a stone's throw from the Velia Archaeological Park, has become the subject of two letters from the President of the Angelo Vassallo Foundation, signed by Dario Vassallo: one addressed to His Holiness Pope Francis and one addressed to Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, Secretary General of the Italian Episcopal Conference.
“I asked the Pope to verify how it could have happened that the Municipality of Ascea and the Superintendence of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape of Salerno, at the request of the diocese of Vallo della Lucania, granted all the authorizations – Dario Vassallo underlines – We also asked the heads of the ministries to respect the 'Velia Law', created in 2005, which prohibits the construction of any building work and changes to the layout of the territory, to ensure adequate decorum for the area surrounding the archaeological park".
And the Pope's letter yesterday through the Vatican Secretary of State had a continuous response from Vassallo: “He is pleased to point out that the question raised has been brought to the attention of the competent ecclesiastical authority,” reads the document addressed to the Vassallo Foundation, in response to the questions submitted to the Holy Father.
“The problem is always the same, no one saw, no one heard, while others did, destroying one of the most significant places in Western culture. – continues Dario Vassallo – In those places the thought of our civilization was born, but once again we must note that economic interests are more important than the thought that generated our communities.
The Vassallo Foundation was born with the aim of carrying forward the ideas and avant-garde environmentalism of Mayor Pescatore, who paid with his life to defend his land from criminal interests.
His ideas of change and innovation continue through the many young people around the world who are inspired by him. We will not take a step back! We will continue to protect our land, our marine protected areas, against any form of speculation. Thank you Holy Father for your attention to our requests. Defending the planet, defending the environment, means protecting life”.
