Ithe police commissioner of Salerno, Giancarlo Conticchio, following numerous reports of drug dealing in that area of the city, has intensified controls.
The officers stopped and checked a group of foreigners who were wandering along the avenues of the seafront with a suspicious attitude. One was found in possession of ten grams of drugs, including hashish and marijuana, partly hidden in his mouth, for which he was reported. Then, with the help of a drug-sniffing canine unit, in a nearby flowerbed, a purse was found, with another six grams of hashish.
From checks carried out by the Immigration Office, it emerged that they were illegal. They are a young Gambian of 22 years old; another of 20 years old with a criminal record for armed threats who was found to have been present in Italy for four years.
A third, also twenty years old, has already been illegally in our country for more than five years and has previous convictions for evasion, robbery, contempt and resistance to a public official, drug dealing, brawling, receiving stolen goods and has already been hit by two expulsion orders.
The other illegal immigrant, a 26-year-old originally from Senegal, had been present in Italy clandestinely for six years, during which time he committed numerous crimes, extortion, harassment, disturbance of the public peace, aggravated theft and threats.
He too had already been expelled by the prefect of Salerno last September 13, but had never left Italy. All four were expelled. Three of them were accompanied to the temporary detention center of Palazzo San Gervasio in Potenza awaiting repatriation to their countries of origin.
