SyArt Sorrento Festival, contemporary art at Villa Fiorentino. The international event will be held until November 30th
The SyArt Sorrento Festival, an international event dedicated to contemporary art, will be held from October 8th to November 30th at Villa Fiorentino, home of the Sorrento Foundation (Corso Italia, 53 Sorrento).
The organizers, the Cappiello couple and Rossella Savarese of the SyArt Gallery, involved in coordinating the thirty-seven artists on display, for the sixth event of the festival present approximately one hundred works representing countries such as Italy, Spain, the United States, Poland, Nigeria, the United Kingdom, China, Germany, Austria, Iran and Colombia.
An event that has characterized and enriched the calendar of events hosted by the Sorrento Foundation since 2017. From an idea of the visionary collector Leone Cappiello, the format has been structured over time, becoming, for the artists who manage to pass the selections, an opportunity for growth with concrete international visibility. The arduous task of final selection from the hundreds and hundreds of requests received in the various editions that follow falls to the art historian Rossella Savarese, curator and artistic director of the Festival. On display in the large exhibition rooms of V illa Fiorentino are painting, sculpture, installations, photography, fiber art, digital pop, video art.
There is no shortage of site-specific projects, including “Possiamo scambio le figurine” by Rafael Romero, a Spanish artist and teacher who, with his project, motivates citizens’ participation in culture and knowledge. Romero “exchanges” his watercolors (for the City of Sorrento he chooses a marine subject) with the “collectible cards” created by visitors. The final mural is composed exclusively of the works created by the participants and donated to the City of Sorrento. The same project idea has been welcomed in museums and cultural institutions in Spain, Argentina and Morocco and more than four thousand people have participated.
Another interesting site-specific project is “We were there” by Iranian artist Arezu Zargar.
The central theme of this project is an investigation into how to be present while we are absent. Is our presence physical? Are we really in the same place, provided that our presence is recorded? A complex work that combines sculpture, installation and video art and that summarizes the curatorial leitmotif of the entire exhibition that through multiple media and research tells of the human being and his atavistic wriggling in a physical and mental space.
And again the two video art works “La Coscienza” by Ruben Staiano on the need to recognize and therefore listen to the right voice, among the many others that, with all their strength, crush man, from these pressures arise cries of the heart similar to requests for help that can be heard only thanks to an awakened conscience and “Ricerche” by the TeaLtro group directed by Vincenzo Ercolano whose characters move towards a direction that they understand, in part, only by going. They search, around, for what belongs to them even if it is not their property. Their mask is a way to discover a freedom held back until that moment between streets, rooms and deadlines: if you have to wear a mask then it is better to choose the one that represents us. In this wandering in the exhibition space the video art work dialogues with the migrants protagonists of the installation “Stella Maris” by Massimo Campagna
The collaboration with the National Cancer Institute IRCCS Fondazione G. Pascale of Naples is also confirmed with the project “Adotta una Parete”. The artist Gualtiero Redivo and the SyArt Gallery donate a work to the hospital as a therapeutic tool and source of benefit for patients.
The wooden trophy for the assignment of the Arbiter Fata Verde Prize, an award reserved for one of the artists in the exhibition, is made by the Sorrentine artist Toni Wolfe.
