The month of September 2022 sees the confirmation of the renewed positive trend of reduction in waste fires in the Land of fires: there were 69 incendiary events, compared to 130 in September 2021 (175 in September 2020) and 108 last August.
Still above the winter values are the data relating to the coastal municipalities (Mondragone, Castel Volturno and Giugliano in Campania – coastal area) where 15 fires were recorded in June, 52 in July, 16 in August and 10 in September against the zero of the winter months.
The seasonality of the phenomenon appears to be confirmed, in strong connection with the number of residents (the number of fires in urban areas where there are structural deficiencies in the collection system is directly proportional to the number of residents).
However, the decreasing trend is also evident, not only due to the progressive "emptying" of summer homes in those territories but also in relation to previous years: in September 2020, in fact, there were 31 fires on the coastal strip and 2021 in September 26.
The municipality most affected by the phenomenon is consistently Castel Volturno, but in that municipal territory the decrease appears even more significant: 18 in September 2020, 12 in September 2021 and 4 in September 2022. Fires in Roma camps were 4,7% of the total, a further decrease compared to previous months, but these are often fires of significant size and great visibility, such as to cause strong social alarm.
Abandonments are still increasing despite the lower number of fires, confirming the empirical data that even where preventive and repressive action decreases the number of arson events, it does not reduce the quantity of waste abandoned in the territory, notoriously connected to the structural problems of the waste cycle. The increase in sanctions is significant, more than tenfold compared to the average of previous years.
