Making abandoned land of Royal Lagni a “Garden of Europe” means transforming the 1200 square kilometers in Campania that today host 1.600.000 inhabitants into 95 Municipalities of 4 Provinces. An immense work that can count on an initial financing of 40 million euros from the Campania Region.

In the idea launched by Francesco Todisco, commissioner of the Consortium for the Land Reclamation of the Lower Volturno Basin, “it will be a large ecological corridor, we will try to create the slow highway to travel on foot or by bike towards beauties of the territory such as Carditello. Let's also make that territory hydraulically safe”. The project was presented today and will go to tender, explains Todisco “in 2023, to immediately begin work that we aim to finish by 2027”.7 The plan includes, explains Matteo Pedaso of the Land architecture studio that created the project, “an intervention on water – he says – with 13 first rain tanks, 6 new sedimentation tanks, 4 new flywheel tanks.

All to create a structure that connects the coast with the mountains of the interior. A cycle/pedestrian path from Castel Volturno to Nola, but also paths of transversal connection between the Municipalities. Then also green structures to live in. We shape the soil, we give space to water, we insert nature. Also in the territories of Acerra and Marcianise that have industrial areas around them”.

The project has three areas: the valley branch that aims to create 60 km of linear forest and a new walk; the escape channels and tributaries of the plain with 9 equipped areas that become gates of the park towards the nearby canal and a dense network of 180 km of cycle-pedestrian connections; the Lagni fluenti di monte, paths of discovery of hydraulic archaeology and insertion of sedimentation tanks that can help make the maintenance of the main channels less burdensome, collecting the sediments upstream.

The territory of the Regi Lagni is today made up of a network of historic canals built during the Spanish viceroyalty (56th century) that collect rainwater and spring water, channeling it from the plain north of Naples for over XNUMX km towards the sea. A network of artificial canals that have been subject to degradation and pollution.

The project starts from the need for hydraulic remediation that becomes an opportunity to implement a new 60 km green and blue infrastructure from the sea to the mountains of the interior, connecting to the large regional parks. A new ecological corridor made of woods and wetlands that will improve the quality of the water, increase the resilience of the territory to climate change and increase biodiversity.
