The Open Fiber construction sites linked to the National Recovery and Resilience Plan have started in Naples. The works are part of the 'Piano Italia a 1 Giga' which will allow over a thousand street numbers in the Neapolitan capital to be connected to the ultra-fast fiber optic network.
At the end of the intervention, the city will be covered by the latest generation of optical fiber practically in its entirety. The new intervention of Open Fiber in Naples includes the coverage of areas not reached so far by very high capacity networks (VHCN – Very High Capacity Network): in particular, the works are concentrated in some portions of the neighborhoods Pianura, Soccavo, Secondigliano, Camaldoli and the industrial area.
“The start of construction in the Naples area aims to further reduce the digital divide, thus guaranteeing everyone the right to connection, which has become fundamental for study, work, business activities and leisure – explains Giovanni Schiattarella, field manager coordinator Campania of Open Fiber -.
The awarding of the Infratel Italia tender financed with public funds from the Pnrr demonstrates Open Fiber's constant commitment to connecting Southern Italy, promoting social cohesion through the development of the ultra-broadband network and making it attractive for economic investments".
“This modern, secure and sustainable network infrastructure further projects Naples into the dimension of technological innovation – adds Schiattarella -. The FTTH network is a strategic technology that offers optimal and secure performance in any condition and ensures stable and high-performance access to numerous cutting-edge digital services”.
In Naples, Open Fiber has already connected over 417 thousand real estate units thanks to a private investment of approximately 120 million euros. For some time now, the city has had an active telecommunications network built in Ftth mode (Fiber To The Home, fiber to the home), the only technological solution capable of guaranteeing connection speeds of up to 10 Gigabits per second and latency of less than 5 milliseconds.
Performances that facilitate the use of numerous services: from telemedicine to smart working, to distance learning. The ultrabroadband network also allows for the connection of municipal public services, enabling the so-called Smart City that makes urban centers modern, technologically advanced and future-proof.
The works related to the PNRR are also underway in other municipalities in Campania: the first phase includes coverage of over 16 thousand civic numbers, equivalent to approximately 40 thousand real estate units. Open Fiber has been awarded a total of 8 lots in the tender, for a total of 3.881 municipalities in 9 regions: in addition to Campania, also Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Lombardy, Puglia, Sicily, Tuscany and Veneto.
The Plan includes the creation of high-speed telecommunications networks with coverage of 3,9 million homes.
