All confirmed: the cold coming from the Balkans is still causing bad weather in the Center-South with lots of snow on the Apennines, another 30-40 cm of fresh snow after the storms of the last 10 days.
Article Key Points
This will be the weekend of the blackbird, or the coldest days of the year. Also in Naples and Campania. Meteorologists confirm that until the first days of February the weather will remain wintery with subsequent cold impulses from the northern quadrants.
In particular, air masses of Russian polar origin will enter the valleys of the Dinaric Alps sliding from the North-East towards Lower Marche, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and Puglia with snowfall up to low hill altitudes; the cold air will then be unstable in contact with the still warm air masses that are stationary in the far South generating other thunderstorms and local snowfall at low mountain altitudes.
In short, we will still have bad weather in the South and on the Adriatic coast while in the North and in Tuscany the sun will shine again albeit with freezing conditions in the morning and cold during the day.
In the next few hours the most intense phenomena are expected between Molise and Puglia, but also around the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, with a minimum of low pressure that will slowly move towards the Greek Ionian islands.
With the cold days comes the cold and frost
The most important note, after the one on the heavy snowfall in the Apennines, concerns the expected temperatures: -2°C/+5°C in the North, -1°C/+7°C in the Center, +3°C/+9°C in the South. These are temperatures lower than the average for the period by about 5°C and cause an intense sensation of cold where accompanied by strong winds; but in particular it seems that it is very cold because with Global Warming we are no longer accustomed to the normal winter temperatures of January.
After all, we are in the Giorni della Merla, which are traditionally the coldest of the year, so we shouldn't be surprised by these values predicted by the thermometer: the huge amount of snow that has fallen in the Apennines, on the other hand, besides making us rejoice like children, is a pleasant anomaly, a symbol of an Italian winter that still exists and resists.
