Locked up in their home for years. They are not prisoners but it is as if they were. They are both handicapped but cannot use the condominium elevator.
The reasons why the two elderly people have been prevented from using the elevator in their apartment building in Procida since 2017 are linked to the fact that their home is registered at a different number than the building in question, whose driver is the Metropolitan City of Naples, and because since 2005 the building has been used as a school facility for the ITN “F. Caracciolo” institute.
Despite the fact that last April, the Naples Court ruled that the two are entitled to the elevator keys—since their home is physically located in the building in question, because they are disabled and have a right to it, and because the elevator was built before the current condominium was built, when the sole owner was the Municipality of Procida—nothing has changed so far.
The son of the two reported the situation and turned to the deputy of the Green Left alliance Francesco Emilio Borrelli: "We won a lawsuit against the metropolitan city in April. The judge ordered her to hand over the key to the elevator located in the condominium area but it has still not been delivered to us despite many reminders and meetings.
My parents need care and if they can't use the elevator, they can't. My mother has dementia and my father is disabled. We feel like we're being made fun of because everyone uses this elevator except my parents.”
“We urge the Metropolitan City to hand over the elevator keys to the gentlemen. This affair is, unfortunately, yet another demonstration that the weakest are not recognized even the smallest of rights, even when the law and a sentence demonstrate it.
We are outraged and worried about this society that bows before bullies and criminals and instead raises its voice against those who should be protected and supported. We expect that at least this unpleasant matter will be clarified and resolved quickly,” Borrelli said.
